About Carbon IMPT
Carbon IMPT is the working notebook of the carbon team at IMPT — the climate-positive hotel-booking and on-chain carbon retirement platform that retires one verified tonne of CO₂ on every booking. We publish explainers, project deep-dives, and policy notes on the voluntary carbon market and how it intersects with travel. The site is plain English, opinionated, and updated continuously as the market changes.
Our editorial standard is the same as our retirement standard: every claim links to a primary source — a registry record, a peer-reviewed paper, an IPCC chapter, or an official regulatory document. We do not write puff-piece offset reviews. When a credit category breaks down, we say so.
Who runs this
The carbon team at IMPT is a small group of climate-finance and verification specialists working with operators across 195 countries. We are based in Dublin, Ireland, with team members in Cape Town, Toronto, and Singapore. The site is one of the public artefacts of our work — a way for travellers, corporate buyers, and the broader climate community to see how we think and what we trust.
How we choose credits
Every booking retirement on IMPT draws from a held inventory of credits listed on either Verra or the Gold Standard. We default-weight toward removal-track methodologies (biochar VCS-2700 family, mangrove restoration Gold Standard 11000 family, blue-carbon coastal restoration) because removal tonnes do not depend on counterfactual reasoning to be real. Avoidance credits sit in our portfolio only when the additionality argument survives third-party scrutiny — primarily UN-recognised REDD+ projects in jurisdictions with verified deforestation baselines.
What we will not write
We will not write content that pretends a hotel offset neutralises a long-haul flight. It does not. We will not write content that endorses voluntary credits sold without a queryable registry serial. We will not write content that conflates voluntary and compliance markets. And we will not write content sponsored by a registry, a project developer, or a carbon broker — the editorial side of Carbon IMPT is funded entirely by the IMPT booking platform, and there is no advertising.
